Best Kayaking Spots in Florida
Are you looking for a few sweet spots for kayaking around Florida?
Well, as you might have guessed, there are plenty of great rivers and parks to spend a gorgeous day in September. We’ve compiled a list of our favorites, including Juniper Springs, Rainbow River, and Three Sisters Springs.
Best Kayaking Spots in Florida
- Suwannee River - Here’s a gorgeous option, just a couple hours north of us. Suwannee River goes from the Okefenokee Swamp before cutting through the Panhandle and eventually emptying into the Gulf of Mexico (246 miles altogether). It includes a wilderness trail with plenty of wooded scenery (and shade for it’s hot). Kayakers tell us this is a pretty smooth ride in terms of water conditions.
- Crystal River - This is where many of the manatees go in the winter, seeking warmer waters. It’s north of Tampa, close to HWY 98 on the way to the Waccasassa Bay State Park. The river was formed by 30 springs, creating a scenic and enjoyable place to kayak.
- Juniper Springs - Then there’s this “primitive” kayaking spot, which offers adventurers the opportunity to go through some thick and pristine forest areas. Be aware, however, the only drawback is that this is a popular spot, so it’s better to avoid peak traffic times (with possibly dozens of kayakers).
- Rainbow River - This one’s east of Crystal River and comes from a gigantic spring. Besides kayaking, you might run into quite a few divers and snorkelers, owing to its spectacular water clarity. It’s also a fantastic location for cave exploration. Rainbow River is only about six miles long, so it’s more optimal for folks who like to get out of the kayak and check out whatever’s around them.
- Three Sisters Springs - Here’s perhaps an even better chance to spot hundreds of manatees thanks to the comfortable inlet waters. Kayakers should be aware, however, that they close this site sometimes to protect them. So, check online to see if it’s open before traveling.
- Weeki Wachee River - Finally, you won’t want to miss Weeki Wachee River, voted as the #1 Kayaking Destination by the publication, Florida Kayaker. The kayaking aspect includes plenty of beautiful scenery such as its first-magnitude spring and plenty of cypress and palm trees. Then, there’s the Weeki Wachee State Park, full of theatrical performances and other fun exhibits.
